I originally made this as a hat for preemies, newborns and babies but have gotten such a wonderful response on it, that I modified the pattern and edge trim for toddlers and children.
This hat is a bit stretchy and fits nice and snug for a warm layer in the chilly months.
As with my other free patterns I have offered, this is free for personal use only. The pattern can be made for gifts, charities, etc., but not for sold items!
Materials Needed:
• For a toddler hat: About 75 yards worsted weight washable yarn and a 5mm (size H) hook. (Fits 2-4 year olds) You could also make it with a DK weight yarn, same hook for a smaller hat.
• For a child sized hat: (Fits 4-12 year olds) About 85 yards worsted weight washable yarn and a 5.5mm (size I) hook.
• Needle to weave in ends
The hat shown in the pattern was made with Blue Sky Alpacas Organic Cotton, the Mediterranean colorway.

If you make this cute cap, I would appreciate a link back to the pattern either here on the blog or on Ravelry so others can use it as well. Happy Crocheting!

I love this hat! Thanks for the tutorial. I'd love for you to submit this over at the M&T Spotlight: http://www.makeandtakes.com/spotlight
ReplyDeleteI will try to do this hat I will let you know if I get it! Thanks
ReplyDeletemaking 4 of these for kids at my daughter's B-day party (as party favors)...two down and two to go- great and easy! thank you
ReplyDeleteHi! I love this hat. I have made one for my son & now my husband is demanding one too! Have you by any chance worked on the adult version? I was going to try & wing it, but would love the pattern if you have finished it.
ReplyDeleteIts gorgeous! I think I may attempt to make one for my little guy, he's 18mo old, but has a big noggin, I think :-) Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteLoved this pattern! Made one for my 1 year old son. Now my husband wants one. How do I adjust pattern for an adult? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous- If you are a tight crocheter, I would: add one stitch to round 1 (15 sts total) which will make an extra rib and an additional stitches to 30 for round 2 and 3
ReplyDeleteround 4 will be 45 sts
round 5 will be 60 sts
I hope this makes sense.
Additionally, I can tell you, with the worsted weight and a size I hook, I can wear my older sons hats... projects are on my Ravelry project page.

i really want to try your hat pattern for my little nephew..im new to crocheting...it seems fairly easy...not too complicated..and i catch on pretty easy so im excited to try it... but im not sure what fpdc is? Something double crochet right? I feel silly asking but could you please explain the stitch? thankyou sooo much!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous- It's not a silly question at all. fpdc is a front post double crochet. Do you see how the stitches stand out or appear raised every few stitches... it's that one. CrochetGeek (tjw1963) on YouTube has an awesome video on this.
ReplyDeleteI hope this helps! :-)

I love this hat! Can't wait to make this for my son. It has such a classic look. I love it. thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHey there! This hat is so cute, going to knock a few boys' Christmas presents off my list! About how long does it take you to finish one?
ReplyDeleteHi Jessica- I am a slow crocheter and I would say I knocked these out in about two hours? I rarely get to sit from beginning to end and complete one though due to my boys needing this or that. :-) Hettie
