Free New Crochet Pattern: Rib-wrapped baby cap

Rib-wrapped baby cap

I have been working on preemie hats for the non-profit organization Stitches from the Heart and wanted to come up with my own pattern. This cap is the result. The cap can be made for a boy or a girl and can be easily modified from this size (which is for a 7-9 lb. newborn) for a head circumference up to about 18 inches (think kid sized). Also, this hat is a bit stretchy, so count on a bit of give.

As with my washcloth pattern, I am offering it here free for personal use only. The pattern can be made for gifts, charities, etc., but not for sold items!

Materials Needed:
  • For a newborn hat, 14" circumference: DK weight washable yarn, about 75 yards and a 5mm (size H) hook
  • For a 3-6 month baby hat: Worsted weight washable yarn, about 90 yards and a 5.5mm (size I) hook
  • Needle to weave in ends
Hats shown in the pattern were made with Lion Brand Cotton Ease in Blossom, Snow and Violet.

Pattern:
Chain 3
Round 1: In first chain, crochet 11DC. Join with a ss to top of the chain 3 (makes 12 sts total)
Round 2: Chain 2. fpdc then dc in each stitch. Repeat all the way around. Join with a ss to top of chain 2. (24 sts)
Round 3: Chain 2. *fpdc in fpdc. 2dc in each dc* Repeat all the way around. Join with a ss to top of chain 2. (36 sts)
Round 4: Chain 2. *fpdc in fpdc. dc in top of same fpdc. dc in each dc* Repeat all the way around. Join with a ss to top of chain 2 (48 sts) SEE PHOTO below for more info on this round.
Round 5: Chain 2. *fpdc in fpdc. dc in each dc* Repeat all the way around. Join with a ss to top of chain 2. (48 sts)
Rounds 6-12 (6-14): Repeat round 5 seven more times for newborn. For 3-6 month version, repeat nine times.
Round 13-14 (15-16): Chain 1. sc around and join with ss at end of row.

Weave in ends.

That's it! Below is a photo of the rib detail once the hat is finished. I have also done a simple shell pattern for the edging for girl caps instead of the sc around and it comes out very cute! Just a 3dc then ss all the way around.

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or spot an errors.

If you make this cute little cap, I would appreciate a link back to the pattern either here on the blog or on Ravelry so others can use it as well.

Happy Crocheting!
