I finally unwound at Camp GetAway!!

Picking up from my last blog... I wanted to tell you how my Camp GetAway weekend went!

I spent all day Thurdsay doing last minute weather research and looking at the Camp GetAway blog along with the many other things on my "to do" list... which was an entire page full of teeny tiny written obsessive mommy-type junk that I just HAD to get done before leaving. You know, like my husband wouldn't survive if I didn't wash and vacuum every surface in the house!

Thursday night, I was up waaayyy too late finishing some schoolwork, laundry and other household junk... everything BUT packing and prepping for camp like I had promised myself. I didn't even take a shower... ick!

Friday morning, I'm up with the birds (as in practically no sleep) and grumpily get in the shower... and then it clicks in my head... today is the day!!! The day to leave for camp! Immediately, I start to relax and smile right there with soap all over my hair.

Now, I'm racing... I quickly pack up everything ... My mom arrives right on time and we smooch the babies and hubby goodbye and we're off!

Ohmygod! I'm getting away!
The drive up to Big Bear is blessedly traffic free and uneventful. Cool, crisp air and the scent of pine fill the car and I can feel the tightened coil that is my core start to unwind.
Oooh look, a chipmunk!

The signs to camp tell you to relax! The first words I read in my registration packet are "Welcome... Breathe!" Well okay... I can do that! I plant myself next to the fireplace and wait for the others to arrive.

That evening, the Fearless Leader Patti (center of photo with cute pink bandanna) introduces the camp staff... my mommy is the redhead with the blue apron right below her... isn't she cute!

I feel my typical ultra-uptight exterior slipping away and I'm smiling and sharing in the laughter with all the other wonderful mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmas and friends at my table. For those of you who know me, this is not an easy task!

Saturday brought on more relaxing activities and... I got to sleep in!!! I was able to take a shower without a toddler at my feet or a telephone to interrupt me! No diapers, no sippy cups, no wee ones in sight... that was weird.

After breakfast, I opted to tie-dye some shirts for the munchkins as other ladies popped in and out from their manicures, massages, facials and pedicures. Others were making mosaics, taking yoga or photography classes or hiking in the woods.

After tie-dyeing, I made Memory Bookmarks (see mommy & me pic to the right) and did a little crocheting while talking to some other campers by the giant fireplace. I usually am pretty introverted and quiet, but it just seemed easy to fall into a conversation with anyone there on just about any topic...

Each sip of hot cocoa and tea was wonderful-- meaning I got to sip not gulp like I often have to at home. And, I could keep my tea where I wanted it and know it would still be there and not moved by little hands!

The Luau dinner was hysterical! Contests for cutest belly-button, ugliest Hawaiian t-shirt, whitest legs (I entered this one!) and tannest legs were "judged" by a trio of a mom and her twin daughters acting like Paula, Randy and Simon. Then came hula-hooping, dancing, board games, karaoke and S'mores!!!

S'mores are a wonderful thing!

My face actually started to hurt from all the smiling and I finally realized what my mom did a long time ago... I really need to come to Camp GetAway and re-discover the woman I was before I was a mommy. Not that I dislike my mommy side, but the woman side of me that is more than a mommy was getting buried under crayons and sandpails and train tracks.

The next day I woke up eager to enjoy the morning sunshine and sat quietly alone for a bit just "being" in the woods and taking in the energy of the nature around me. I felt very peaceful and centered inside. Being in nature is very renewing for me... and I already knew I had to come back to camp again to help keep this feeling alive!

Breakfast was, as usual, amazing and delicious (vanilla poached pears on pancakes!) and we all seemed to laugh easily and heartily at the drop of a hat. We sang the Camp GetAway song that is a remake of "Home on the Range" with lyrics like "Where never it smells like Macaroni 'n Shells... and the skies are like Windex all day!" and another hysterical remake of "If you're happy and you know it".

Then came the raffle prizes.. the first of which is the most coveted, a free camp weekend. That... I won!
I won I won I won!!! Here is Fearless Leader Patti congratulating me! I still can't believe I won!
A few more hysterical moments and the weekend was over before I realized it! I left wanting more... I took away some wonderful new friendships with ladies who came from the East Coast, the West Coast, from the North and from the South (yep, people fly in for this weekend!). The camp staffers could not have been more accommodating and genuinely nice and happy to be there and happy to be there for each of us campers.
I'll be going to the next Camp GetAway in April and hope to get my mom, mother-in-law and sister-in-law to join me! I would love to have a big family retreat, but if I end up going alone, that'll be fine too-- I've learned my lesson now about needing to do something for myself. And next time, I'm getting a massage!

Camp GetAway here I come!

The last load of laundry is in the washing machine...

The "what to pack" list is set...

I'm completely exhausted and I've got a zillion things to do before I leave for Camp GetAway tomorrow but the excitement is carrying me like a tidal wave... and will hopefully continue to do so all day!

Other than giving birth to my second son, I have never been away from my children for more than 8 hours (and that was to go to work!) so I've had someone in the bathroom with me for every showering and potty experience for the past 3 1/2 years! Don't get me wrong-- I wouldn't trade with anyone else for all the chocolate on the planet, but I'm tired. I need a break!

If my hand feels good enough (still healing) I'm going to attempt archery! I also plan to earn badges in oversleeping and vegitating with a book and a crochet project!

The weather is supposed to be nice and chilly to a Southern California gal like myself, so if I'm lucky I'll be crocheting next to a fireplace!

I'm off to get the fridge stocked for my hubby. This will be his first weekend with the boys all alone and I want him to be as prepared as possible. Admittedly, I also don't want to have to do jack-squat the day I come back!

Will I miss my munchkins? Of course without a doubt! But there comes a time when a mommy needs to take care of herself... and my time is long overdue!

Do you think they'll give him a run for his money???

Nnnaaaaahhhhh ;-)

Monday Afternoon Randomness & Catch-up

Just a quick blog full of photos more than words since I'm still recovering from my lame umbrella lever hand slicing accident! (Sliced open my right palm... ooowwwwy!) It is only about 1 1/2 inches long, but where it is is what is causing all the fuss... (if you're squeamish... don't look!)

What have we been up to?

Ocean impression by Em. These are some rocks and shells we collected on our trip to Leo Carillo Beach. We also stacked rocks, examined hermit crabs... made shawls out of seaweed and watching a surfing competition. Excellent fun!

After trashing my hand, Em was kind enough to peel the potatoes and carrots for Beef Stew. He is a natural and went on to do cucumbers also. Apples will be his next accomplishment for Thanksgiving pies I think!

When my hand is a little better, I'll have lots of Halloween goodies, trivia, pumpkin drawings and more!!
Oh! And Camp GetAway is this weekend! Woo Hoo! I can't wait to "do nothing"!

Nothing exciting... just a pic of my wee ones this morning. I love the look they're giving me!
Enjoy your day!

A favorite book

I received the book "You are my I Love You" by Maryann Cusimano (and beautifully illustrated by Satomi Ichikawa) as a baby shower gift for my first munchkin. It is a soothing, loving, wonderful book about a baby bear and dad (but it could be a mom too!) that starts out "I am your parent; you are my child. I am your quiet place; you are my wild."

And it continues throughout their day all the way past a dry towel and a wet bath... to the ending of... "I am your good-night kiss; you are my I love you."

I have read this book with my eldest over 300 times and now with my youngest over 100 times and I never get tired of it! Maybe it is that I really feel the love and emotion in the words of this book... maybe it is that I feel the love for my child... I don't know. But I thought I'd share it with you all.

What books do you or your munchkins love to read over and over again? Please share with me!

Watering...

I cannot remember when, but some time ago, I read on my blog-friend Shereen's site about putting a bucket in the shower to catch the water that would usually go down the drain and using it for things like watering the plants. I'm talking about the clean, non-soapy water that passes you while standing in the shower... or you know what I mean!

Anyway, I thought that was such a cool and easy green idea! Since we've been having record breaking heat here in Los Angeles, our newly planted gardenia bushes are suffering a bit... so a little extra water would be nice for them. Em saw the bucket filled with water from my morning shower and asked me what it was for. The "reduce, reuse, recycle" motto is very well understood by him, so I explained that rather than waste the water, we were going to reuse it to give the plants a drink... he was immediately excited and jumping up and down and wanting to go out now now now to give the plants the water. "They're thirsty Mom!" he said to me. How could I refuse?

So out we went in PJ's and all to the front door and quenched the thirst of the three plants... he gave them each their share saying "here's some for you, and some for you and some for you" with a big grin on his face!

Just a fun moment to share. Thanks Shereen for the idea! I now keep a bucket in the shower to catch the water but also as an indicator of how long I've been in there.

Pretty green scarf (and 1st day of school!)

I think 2/3 of the people on my holiday list will be getting scarves this year! It's a great way for me to master new stitches as well as use up the delicious yarn stash I've accumulated in the past few months... and of course, best of all, I get to give something personally made with love for each recipient of such an item.

This is a scarf I made for my mom. The yarn is a little scratchy, so I made it more of a stylish accessory than a keep-you-warm type of scarf. With my mom's red hair, these colors will stand out nicely on her I think. They yarn is from Italy and called Gedifra Fiocco (2005 collection #4072) and has a slight mermaid sheen to it. I crocheted horizontally single, single, half double half double and repeat until I got to 5 inches by 5 1/2 feet long (petite mom) and then added a 5x1 shell edge to give it a little ruffle.

The next scarf is for my munchkin and his love of orange. I was at a 50% off sale on Saturday and Em picked this pretty orange yarn... super soft! But, I have no idea what it is and there was only one skein, so I'll be making him a scarf and hat with this and some funky black yarn from my stash. I'm going to try to add either some bobbles or puffs to give it a bit of character.

I'm off to get Em ready for his first day of homeschool! Since this month is Child's Safety month, we'll be working on safety lessons --knowing how to dial, phone numbers, scissor care, kitchen care, etc. Also, our field trip this week will be to Leo Carillo Beach (named after the conservationist) to visit the tidepools and work on observation and counting.
